BAHASA INGGRIS BISNIS 2 - MEETING 5-8

Task 1 (Affirmative Agreement)

Direction: supply the correct form of the verb for the simple statement in each of the following sentences. Elaborate your reason.
1 Rose likes to fly, and her brother ______ too.
2 They will leave at noon, and I _______ too.
3 Their plane is arriving at nine o’clock, and so ______ mine.
4 I should go grocery shopping this afternoon, and so _______ my neighbour.
5 Our English teacher loves to travel, and so ________ we.

ANSWERS
1. Does. Because “Rose likes to fly” is Present Tense and not using to be, so the blank must filled by do/does.
2. Will. If there is only auxiliary verb in the main clause, then the auxiliary verb is also used in the second clause and the tenses must be the same.
3. Is. If there is only “to be” in the main clause, then use the (Affirmative statement (to be) + and + so + to be + subject) formula.
4. Should. Like answer number 2, if there is only auxiliary verb in the main clause, then the auxiliary verb is also used in the second clause and the tenses must be the same.
5. Do. There is no “to be” in the main clause, and the subject in second clause is plural, so “do” is right choice.

Task 2 (Negative Agreement)

Direction: fill in the blanks with the correct form of either or neither. Elaborate your reason.
1 The children shouldn’t take that medicine, and _______  should she.
2 I don’t like plan to attend the concert, and ______ do they.
3 The Yankess couldn’t play due to the bad weather, and ______ could the Angels.
4 Mary can’t type well, and her sister can’t ______.
5 They won’t have to work on weekends, and we won’t ______.

ANSWERS
1. Neither. In the second clause, the word “should she” is a positive auxiliary.
2. Neither. In the main clause, there is no “to be”, so we use do/does. In the second clause, the word “do they” is positive form.
3. Neither. In the second clause, the word “could the Angels” is a positive auxiliary.
4. Either. The second clause use negative auxiliary.
5. Either. The second clause use negative auxiliary.

Task 3

Direction: identify the one underlined word or phrase that would not be acceptable in standard written English. Elaborate your reason.
1 He isn’t driving to the convention in March, and neither they are.
2 Catherine is studying law at the university, and so does John.
3 Because they have moved away, they hardly never go to the beach anymore.
4 Mary and her sister studied biology last year, and so does Jean.
5 George has not completed the assignment yet, and Maria hasn’t neither.

ANSWERS
1. Driving. The main clause is negative, so don’t use -ing.
2. So does John. The main clause is using “to be”, so the second clause sholud use “to be”.
3. Hardly never. Just a typo, it should be written “hardly ever”.
4. So does Jean. The main clause is Past Tense, so the second clause should use “did”.
5. Hasn’t neither. The second clause is negative, so use “either” and not “neither”.
